Study in China on a scholarship

Studying in China does not have to be expensive. With the right scholarship pathway, many students study tuition-free, receive accommodation support, and even get a monthly living stipend. We help you understand your options, choose the right route, and apply with confidence.

Scholarship types available

China offers several major scholarship pathways. Each differs slightly in coverage and competitiveness.

Apply

1. Chinese government scholarship (CSC)

The most comprehensive and widely recognized option, funded by the Chinese government.

  • Tuition waiver

  • Free accommodation or accommodation subsidy

  • Monthly stipend

  • Medical insurance

2. Local government scholarships

Offered by provincial and city governments such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Kunming, and others.

  • Type A: Tuition, accommodation or subsidy, and living allowance

  • Type B: Tuition and accommodation or subsidy

3. University scholarships (President’s scholarship)

Awarded directly by universities, often with flexible coverage depending on the applicant’s profile.

  • Type A: Tuition, accommodation or subsidy, and living allowance

  • Type B: Tuition and accommodation or subsidy

  • Type C: Tuition only

Applicants must meet both scholarship and university admission requirements.

Additional requirement for Bachelor’s applicants:

  • Non-Chinese citizenship
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Meeting age requirements of the chosen program
  • Meeting academic requirements of the target university
  • Chinese-taught programs: Required HSK level
  • English-taught programs: IELTS score report
Applicants for bachelor’s degrees must take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) and submit a valid score report.

Required application documents

Most scholarship applications require the following:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship application form

  • Passport photo page

  • Notarized highest diploma or graduation certificate

  • Academic transcripts

  • Language proficiency certificate (HSK or IELTS)

  • CSCA score report (for bachelor’s applicants)

  • Admission or pre-admission documents

  • Study or research plan

    • Undergraduate: at least 200 words

    • Non-degree: at least 500 words

    • Postgraduate: at least 1,000 words

  • Recommendation letters

  • Portfolio for arts or design programs, if required

  • Legal guardian documents for applicants under 18

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (for stays over 6 months)

  • Clean background report issued within the last 6 months
